Jaguar welfare in captive settings requires meeting the needs of the most powerful apex predator in the Americas — a species whose ecological adaptations for swimming, wide-ranging territory, and solitary ambush hunting create welfare needs that are challenging to provide at zoo scale. The aquatic behavioral need of jaguars distinguishes them from most other large cats and is frequently inadequately addressed in zoo exhibits: water features must be large enough for genuine swimming, not merely provided as a visual element. Solitary social management is critical — jaguars should be housed individually except during carefully managed breeding periods, as forced cohabitation causes chronic social stress. Enclosure complexity must simulate the varied terrain and vegetation density of jaguar habitat, providing opportunities for climbing, stalking, hiding, and marking.
