Pig housing innovation represents the practical frontier of converting welfare science into real-world change for one of the most numerically significant farm animal species. The conventional confinement model — barren slatted floors, gestation crates, farrowing crates — has driven significant welfare compromise at enormous scale. Alternative housing systems demonstrate that commercially viable pork production can occur with dramatically better welfare outcomes. Deep-litter systems provide substrate for rooting and exploration that satisfies fundamental behavioral drives while remaining manageable at commercial scale. Hoop barns, widely used in the US midwest for alternative pork production, provide naturally ventilated space with bedded floors at infrastructure costs lower than conventional confinement buildings. Outdoor systems provide the most complete behavioral freedom but require excellent stockpersonship and environmental management to prevent welfare and environmental problems from inadequate shelter, parasites, and mud.
