Barefoot horse management is an area where genuine welfare evidence intersects with strong ideological camps, requiring careful navigation between dogmatic advocacy positions and dismissive conventional practice. The evidence base supports several clear conclusions: natural hoof function involving expansion and contraction with each step optimizes blood circulation in the lower limb; traditional steel shoeing restricts this flexion and reduces circulation; transition to barefoot management can improve hoof health in many horses given adequate transition time and appropriate management. However, the evidence also supports that not all horses in all circumstances are suitable for barefoot management: horses doing significant work on abrasive surfaces require hoof protection, boots provide this protection while allowing natural flexion, and some horses with specific pathologies have welfare needs better met by appropriate therapeutic shoeing. The welfare-informed approach treats hoof management as an individual decision requiring veterinary and farriery input, not a universal prescription from either the barefoot or shoeing tradition.
