The behavioral repertoire of wild jaguars spans dozens of distinct behavioral categories across locomotion, social behavior, feeding, elimination, rest, and exploratory systems — a richness of behavioral expression that standard captive environments dramatically reduce. Measuring behavioral diversity as a welfare indicator provides more complete information than any single behavioral or physiological measure: a jaguar expressing a diverse range of natural behaviors at normal frequencies is almost certainly experiencing better welfare than one whose daily behavior consists primarily of pacing and lying.
