Wildlife rehabilitation success requires honest evaluation against multiple welfare and conservation criteria that are sometimes in tension. Release rate — the percentage of admitted animals returned to the wild — is the metric most commonly reported by rehabilitation facilities, but it is not the most welfare-relevant outcome: a released animal that survives one week before dying has a worse welfare outcome than one kept humanely in captivity or euthanized promptly. Post-release survival tracking through telemetry provides more meaningful welfare assessment but requires substantial resources that most rehabilitation facilities lack. The ethical question of when rehabilitation is appropriate versus when early euthanasia would be more welfare-serving requires case-by-case assessment: animals with severe injuries that will cause prolonged suffering during treatment with poor prognosis are ethically euthanized early rather than subjected to months of invasive treatment for a poor outcome. Rehabilitation is most clearly justified when outcomes are expected to be good — animals with treatable, non-severe injuries that predictably recover to wild-appropriate function. For species with poor rehabilitation prognoses due to complex social needs, the welfare calculus must honestly acknowledge the limits of what rehabilitation can achieve.
