Tilapia welfare is often overlooked because the species is considered "hardy," but hardiness means capacity to survive poor conditions, not that poor conditions cause no suffering. Research using welfare indicators including cortisol measurements, behavior observation, and injury scoring confirms that intensive tilapia farming commonly falls short of welfare standards applicable to other farmed species. Key welfare challenges include chronic crowding stress, inadequate water quality management, rough handling during grading and harvesting, and inhumane slaughter methods. Welfare certification for tilapia is emerging but still rare, and consumer demand has not yet driven the level of improvement seen in salmon and trout sectors.
