These birds evolved in highly specialized habitats — alkaline and saline lakes that are inhospitable to most species but provide abundant cyanobacteria and invertebrates. Disruption of these habitats through water diversion, pollution, and climate change creates chronic nutritional stress as birds travel further for adequate food. At breeding colonies, human disturbance — from tourism, aircraft overflights, and infrastructure development — causes acute stress responses including colony abandonment that can kill entire breeding cohorts.
