Extensive sheep farming presents welfare challenges that differ fundamentally from intensive systems. The scale of operations — often thousands of animals per farm — means individual monitoring is difficult, and sick or injured animals may go undetected for extended periods. Parasitism is perhaps the most significant chronic welfare burden, causing persistent malnutrition, anemia, and debilitation in poorly managed flocks. Lambing is a high-mortality, high-suffering period — ewes experiencing prolonged dystocia suffer acutely, and neonatal mortality rates in extensive systems are significantly higher than in intensive lambing systems with closer supervision. Management procedures including tail docking and castration, performed without analgesia in many jurisdictions, cause acute pain with documented behavioral indicators persisting for hours.
