Chronic pain in cats is dramatically underdiagnosed due to the species' masking of pain signals. Improved recognition tools and evidence-based treatment approaches are transforming feline pain management.
Feline chronic pain management represents one of the most important welfare frontiers in veterinary medicine. The scale of undertreated pain in cats is extraordinary: degenerative joint disease is essentially universal in older cats, yet most receive no pain management because their owners do not recognize the subtle behavioral changes that indicate chronic discomfort. Cats with joint pain stop jumping to favorite high spots, spend more time sleeping, reduce their grooming range (often leaving their back and hindquarters unkempt), and may miss the litter box rather than step over high sides. These changes accumulate gradually and are easy to attribute to aging rather than treatable pain. The development of validated feline pain assessment tools and safer analgesic options has created real opportunities to improve welfare for the millions of cats living with untreated chronic pain.
