Chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, has caused the most devastating disease-driven wildlife decline in recorded history. Understanding its welfare dimensions informs conservation priorities.
The chytrid fungus pandemic represents welfare harm at an almost incomprehensible scale — the suffering of hundreds of millions of individual amphibians across dozens of species, over decades. The disease mechanism causes a particularly distressing form of death: electrolyte imbalance from disrupted skin function leads to cardiac arrest, preceded by lethargy, loss of coordination, and seizure-like convulsions. The welfare dimensions of this pandemic have received little attention compared to the conservation focus, but the scale of individual suffering involved is extraordinary. Ex situ conservation programs that maintain captive populations of threatened species serve an important function but also raise welfare questions about the quality of life achievable for amphibians maintained in biocontainment facilities for generations.
