Climate change is intensifying heat stress events for farmed livestock globally. Understanding heat stress physiology and management strategies is increasingly critical for farm animal welfare.
Heat stress is a significant and growing welfare threat for farmed animals. Animals in intensive production systems — confined in metal buildings, at high stocking densities, with limited ability to seek shade or water — face acute and chronic thermal stress that causes physiological distress, immune suppression, reproductive failure, and death. The welfare impact is particularly severe for modern high-producing breeds: high-yielding dairy cows and fast-growing broilers generate substantial metabolic heat and are physiologically more vulnerable to temperature extremes than their unimproved counterparts. Climate change is transforming heat stress from an occasional regional problem to a chronic global one. Welfare protection requires both adaptation measures — shade, ventilation, cooling systems, adjusted stocking densities — and mitigation of the climate change driving more extreme events.
