Sea bass welfare in aquaculture is complicated by this species' aggressive, territorial nature. Unlike schooling species that can be kept at higher densities with relatively stable social dynamics, sea bass form dominance hierarchies in which subordinate fish experience chronic social stress from dominant individuals. Regular grading operations that separate fish by size are necessary to reduce this aggression but create recurring handling stress. The welfare challenge is to balance the social dynamics that density management creates against the handling stress of the interventions themselves. Research into stocking density optima that balance these competing welfare concerns has produced clearer guidelines for the industry, but commercial adoption of welfare-superior densities requires economic incentives that the market for conventional sea bass does not currently provide.
