Sun bear welfare encompasses both the acute suffering of animals in bile farming operations and the chronic welfare challenges of captive management in zoos. Bear bile farming causes some of the most severe animal welfare harms in any legal agricultural practice: bears confined in crush cages too small to stand or turn, with open abdominal fistulas through which bile is permanently drained, living in chronic pain and extreme psychological distress. Campaigns by Animals Asia Foundation and others have made significant progress in reducing bile farming operations, but the practice continues in multiple countries. For bears in accredited zoo settings, welfare improvement requires environmental complexity appropriate to their arboreal lifestyle: climbing structures, foraging opportunities, and social management compatible with their somewhat solitary nature.
