Farrowing system design is one of the most actively researched areas in pig welfare science. The welfare case against farrowing crates is clear — they prevent all natural behavior during the most demanding period of a sow's production cycle. The welfare case for specific alternatives requires more nuance: not all free farrowing systems are equal, and poorly designed or managed systems can produce worse piglet mortality outcomes that undermine the welfare argument for transition. The systems with the strongest evidence base — PigSAFE, UCS Comfort Farrowing, and well-designed pen farrowing — demonstrate that high piglet survival is compatible with sow freedom to move and nest. The key design elements are: appropriate pen size (minimum 7m2), protected creep areas with heating, enrichment materials for nesting, and trained stockpeople who monitor closely during the first 48 hours.
