Salmon pre-slaughter welfare represents a significant and addressable welfare concern at massive scale. The evidence that salmon experience stress and potentially pain during crowding and suboptimal slaughter is now sufficient to support welfare-based standards for slaughter methods. Well-designed automated stunning systems — combining electrical immobilization with percussive spiking — can produce rapid unconsciousness in salmon at commercial throughput rates. The welfare gap between certified producers using these systems and conventional producers using crowding and gill-cut or CO2 methods is substantial. Consumer demand for certified salmon, expressed through purchasing choices and retailer engagement, creates market pressure for welfare-superior slaughter adoption. The fact that stress reduction also improves salmon flesh quality aligns commercial and welfare incentives in a way that makes industry change more tractable.
