Bats who roost in human structures provide natural pest control services, yet face persecution and inadvertent harm from building work conducted without attention to bat welfare. Maternity roosts — where mother bats rear pups — are particularly vulnerable: excluding bats in spring or summer traps flightless pups inside, resulting in mass mortality. Lighting changes along bat commuting routes can effectively fragment territories, reducing foraging efficiency and forcing longer, more energetically costly flights. From a welfare perspective, these are preventable harms requiring only timing awareness and lighting sensitivity. Supporting bat coexistence means welcoming roosts where possible, timing building work appropriately, and reducing pesticide use that depletes the insect prey base on which bat populations depend.
