Wildlife rehabilitation welfare assessment requires honest engagement with outcome data that is sometimes disappointing. For some species and injury types, rehabilitation investment produces genuine welfare benefit — the raptor with a fractured wing who survives to fly free again with near-normal survival rates represents a welfare success. For others — the wild songbird with a cat puncture wound, the small mammal with internal trauma — the probability of successful rehabilitation is very low and the suffering of the rehabilitation process may exceed the welfare benefit of the outcome.
