Cattle heat stress welfare is an emerging crisis as climate change increases the frequency and duration of heat events beyond current adaptation capacity. The welfare experience of severe heat stress — elevated body temperature, rapid respiration, reduced movement and feed intake, and in extreme cases death — represents significant suffering for millions of cattle annually. Shade, ventilation, and water access are fundamental welfare provisions that remain inadequate on many farms. The economics of heat stress mitigation — cooling infrastructure costs versus production benefit — are well-documented and generally favor investment; the welfare case provides additional imperative beyond productivity. As temperatures rise, heat stress adaptation must be planned now: breed selection, infrastructure investment, and management modifications require lead time.
