Health welfare — parasite management, disease detection, wound treatment — is often more challenging at scale in extensively managed flocks. The welfare-optimal approach combines the behavioral advantages of extensive systems with proactive health monitoring, targeted treatment programs, and rapid response to welfare emergencies. Producer education on parasite biology, fly strike prevention, and early recognition of health problems is essential for converting extensive systems' potential welfare advantages into actual welfare outcomes for individual animals.
