Equine asthma causes chronic breathing difficulty that ranges from subtle performance compromise to life-limiting airway obstruction — all associated with ongoing discomfort during breathing. The disease is environmentally driven and entirely preventable through hay steaming, appropriate bedding, and maximum ventilation. Infectious respiratory disease causes fever, nasal discharge, and the malaise of systemic illness — vaccination reduces both severity and transmission. The welfare case for preventive respiratory management is particularly strong because the prevention measures — turnout, ventilation, dust reduction — simultaneously improve multiple aspects of welfare beyond respiratory health. Horses in well-ventilated, low-dust environments with vaccination protection have better overall welfare than those receiving respiratory treatment after disease is established.
