Evidence-based strategies for preventing tendon and ligament injuries in sport horses through conditioning protocols, monitoring technologies, and management practices.
Tendon injuries represent one of the most common causes of both performance loss and euthanasia in sport horses. Prevention is both ethically and practically superior to treatment: recovery from SDFT injuries requires 12-18 months of carefully managed rehabilitation, and full return to previous performance levels occurs in fewer than half of cases. Welfare-centered approaches prioritize regular veterinary monitoring, appropriate workload progression, quality footing, and honest assessment of individual horses' biomechanical limitations. Sport horses deserve training programs designed around their physical capabilities rather than competition schedules.
