How technology — underwater cameras, AI monitoring systems, and behavioral sensors — is being developed to improve welfare monitoring and response in cod and other finfish aquaculture.
Welfare monitoring technology represents a promising frontier for improving fish welfare at the scale that aquaculture operates. Traditional welfare assessment in fish relies on sampling — removing individual fish for examination — which itself causes stress and misses real-time population-level welfare states. Continuous, non-invasive monitoring through underwater cameras and behavioral analysis allows welfare assessment without disturbing the fish being monitored. The development of validated behavioral welfare indicators for cod and other species is still in progress, but the technology infrastructure for implementation is advancing rapidly. Welfare monitoring technology is most valuable when it enables earlier intervention — detecting problems before they cause widespread population-level welfare deterioration.
