Technology is becoming an increasingly important tool for animal welfare improvement, enabling monitoring at scales and with consistency that human observation cannot achieve. Early disease detection systems that alert stockpersons before clinical signs are obvious can prevent suffering from conditions that are easy to treat early but difficult and painful if allowed to progress. The most important welfare technology applications address the monitoring gap — the difficulty of continuously assessing the welfare of large numbers of animals across farms, transport, and slaughter systems. Technology cannot replace welfare-positive management philosophy, but it can make welfare assessment continuous, objective, and scalable in ways that transform what is achievable with finite human observation capacity.
