Dehorning is one of the most common and painful procedures performed on cattle worldwide, yet pain management remains inconsistently applied despite effective options being available.
Dehorning without adequate analgesia represents one of the most significant unnecessary pain sources in cattle production. The pain cascade — acute surgical pain, inflammation, and chronic wound pain — is well-documented and severe. Effective multimodal pain management protocols exist and are cost-effective. The continued prevalence of dehorning without analgesia reflects a gap between available science and farm practice that welfare advocates and veterinary organizations are working to close.
