Parvovirus causes prolonged, severe suffering in affected dogs who experience intense vomiting, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and life-threatening dehydration. The welfare tragedy is that this suffering is entirely preventable through vaccination, which is highly effective, relatively inexpensive, and widely available. The welfare obligation to vaccinate dogs against parvovirus is clear both for individual dogs and for the broader canine community whose disease risk increases when vaccination rates decline. Supporting access to low-cost vaccination programs in underserved communities prevents both individual animal suffering and community-level disease amplification.
