Feline CKD management requires welfare-centered thinking at every stage. In early stages, the welfare challenge is that subclinical disease is easily missed while kidney function quietly declines — early detection through senior wellness screening enables interventions that genuinely slow progression. In middle stages, management of nausea, maintained appetite, and adequate hydration become welfare priorities, often achievable through phosphorus restriction, anti-nausea medications, and subcutaneous fluid supplementation. In advanced stages, the welfare calculus shifts increasingly toward quality of life assessment: is the cat still finding pleasure in food, social interaction, and comfortable rest? The temptation to pursue all available treatments must be balanced against the welfare cost of frequent handling, procedures, and interventions in a cat that may find them distressing.
