Competition horse welfare requires addressing the full welfare chain from training methodology through competition management and recovery. Horses cannot consent to competition participation, making the welfare responsibility of riders, trainers, and governing bodies particularly significant. Training methods that cause pain or suppress natural responses for cosmetic effect — rollkur, use of inhumane training aids, excessive collection — violate welfare principles regardless of competitive success. At the competition level, going conditions, schedule management, veterinary oversight, and the training and measurement of pain and fear responses are all welfare levers. The most welfare-progressive approach treats horses as partner athletes whose physical and psychological wellbeing is a primary success metric alongside competitive results.
