Livestock guardian dogs serve a critical welfare function for the livestock they protect, but their own welfare is frequently overlooked. The assumption that working dogs are hardier than companion dogs leads to inadequate veterinary care, nutrition monitoring, and welfare assessment. LGDs working in remote settings may go weeks without close human observation. Injuries from wildlife encounters and harsh winter conditions require prompt veterinary attention. Good LGD welfare requires the same basic assessment and care as any working animal, combined with respect for their autonomous working nature.
