Aquaponics systems offer genuine welfare advantages when well-managed: continuous water filtration supports better water quality than conventional ponds, and the economic incentive to maintain fish health for fertilizer production aligns with welfare goals. However, poorly managed systems can result in rapidly deteriorating water quality and disease outbreaks. Fish welfare in aquaponics requires the same attention as any aquaculture system: appropriate stocking density, water quality monitoring, species-appropriate conditions, and humane harvest methods.
