Elephant enrichment programs in zoos must address cognitive, social, foraging, and physical needs of highly intelligent animals whose welfare requirements far exceed what minimal standards require.
Elephant enrichment welfare requires recognizing that captivity fundamentally constrains elephant life in ways that no enrichment program can fully compensate. The most welfare-positive enrichment programs honestly acknowledge this constraint while maximizing the quality of life available within it. Time-budget enrichment that occupies elephants in foraging-like activities for significant portions of the day, combined with social management that allows appropriate group dynamics and cognitive engagement through varied novel challenges, produces measurably better welfare outcomes than minimal enrichment programs. Elephant welfare is an area where the distance between current best practice and what elephants actually need remains large.
