Correct bit fitting is fundamental to horse welfare as poorly fitted bits cause oral pain, behavioral problems and can mask pain responses that indicate the horse is working in discomfort.
Bit fitting welfare is a significant and underaddressed area of equine care, as oral pain from poorly fitted bits is common, frequently causes behavioral problems that are misinterpreted, and can progress to significant tissue damage before detection. The challenge is that horses cannot verbally communicate oral discomfort and respond to pain through behavioral changes that are often attributed to training problems rather than equipment issues. Welfare-centred riding recognizes that any behavior change including above-the-bit carriage, head tossing or reluctance to take the contact warrants equipment assessment before training intervention. Species-appropriate bit fitting that accounts for individual anatomy including mouth width, tongue thickness and palate height is a welfare obligation for every ridden horse.
