Wild porcupine welfare is affected by multiple human-related threats that cause individual animal suffering from preventable causes. Dog-porcupine encounters cause injuries to both animals — dogs with embedded facial quills require immediate veterinary attention while porcupines injured by dog contact require rehabilitation. Anticoagulant rodenticide exposure causes internal hemorrhage and death that extends well beyond the target rodent species to include porcupines and many other non-target mammals and birds. Vehicle collisions cause physical trauma.
