Pangasius aquaculture presents significant welfare challenges that are poorly visible to consumers because of complex supply chains and inconsistent labeling. While pangasius are resilient fish capable of surviving in conditions that would kill more sensitive species, resilience does not equal absence of stress or suffering. High-density production systems cause measurable chronic stress, immune suppression, and disease vulnerability. The limited welfare criteria in current certification schemes mean that even certified products may come from conditions causing significant fish welfare compromise. Improving pangasius welfare requires better certification standards with meaningful fish welfare criteria, improved supply chain transparency, and consumer awareness that the cheapest option often comes at a welfare cost.
