Technology offers genuine promise for scaling cattle welfare monitoring beyond what is possible through traditional human observation alone. In large commercial herds, individual animal welfare is inherently difficult to assess — precision livestock farming addresses this by providing continuous monitoring data that flags animals requiring attention. The welfare benefit depends entirely on how the data is used: technology that detects lameness earlier and triggers faster treatment improves welfare directly. However, technology cannot substitute for good stockmanship and appropriate housing design — it can only optimize what is available. Ensuring that welfare technology becomes accessible to farmers at all scales, not just large commercial operations, requires appropriate funding and technical support.
