Wing clipping in companion birds is a common management practice whose welfare implications are debated — preventing flight reduces some risks while removing a primary natural behavior.
Wing clipping welfare involves genuine tradeoffs. Flight-enabled birds in inadequately secured environments risk escape, window strikes, and cat attacks. But flight is fundamental to bird welfare — it enables exercise, escape behavior, and positive experiences. Clipped birds show higher rates of obesity, muscle atrophy, and behavioral problems associated with lack of physical exercise. The welfare case increasingly favors providing safe flight environments over permanent clipping, using clipping only as a temporary tool during training and socialization rather than permanent management practice.
