Technology offers practical solutions to one of commercial poultry's fundamental welfare challenges: the impossibility of individually monitoring welfare in houses with tens of thousands of birds. Computer vision gait scoring, vocalization monitoring, and environmental sensor networks create continuous welfare surveillance that identifies problems faster and more reliably than periodic human inspection. The welfare value of this technology is only realized if farmers respond to welfare signals by investigating and addressing problems — technology monitors but does not itself improve conditions. Critically, technology cannot substitute for welfare-positive housing design, slower-growing breeds, and appropriate stocking density. It can optimize what is available within existing systems while the harder work of systems transformation continues.
