Lion welfare in captivity spans a spectrum from excellent to deeply problematic. Well-managed zoo prides in appropriate facilities provide genuine welfare — appropriate pride composition, enriching naturalistic habitats, feeding enrichment, and excellent veterinary care. Canned hunting operations represent the opposite extreme — lions bred in intensive conditions, semi-habituated to humans, and used in staged hunts that represent both welfare failure and profound ethics violations. Between these extremes lie the many zoos and "sanctuaries" where lions are kept in inadequate conditions that prevent natural behavioral expression. Supporting only accredited facilities with demonstrated welfare standards while opposing canned hunting and lion farming is the welfare-appropriate stance for anyone concerned about captive lion welfare.
