The welfare dimensions of Eurasian lynx reintroduction programs and how animal selection, preparation, and post-release monitoring protect individual animals.
Reintroduction is a conservation tool with genuine welfare costs for individual animals that must be weighed against population-level benefits. Animals released into the wild face predation risk, competition, and environmental stressors they have not previously encountered. Thorough pre-release preparation, appropriate site selection, and intensive post-release monitoring are the tools through which welfare costs can be minimized. Reintroduction programs without robust post-release support protocols fail on both welfare and conservation grounds. GPS monitoring technology, while improving survival data, should use the smallest and most comfortable collar designs available.
