Hospital pen management reveals much about the overall welfare culture of a pig farm. Farms with strong welfare cultures use hospital pens as genuine recovery environments: sick animals receive analgesics, bedded resting areas, separated feed and water to prevent competition, and regular monitoring by trained staff. Farms with weaker welfare cultures may use hospital pens as holding areas where animals deteriorate until death or emergency euthanasia. The welfare gap between these two approaches is vast. Isolation stress adds to the suffering of already ill pigs, and pigs too weak to compete may be denied feed and water access in crowded sick bays. Stockperson training in illness recognition, pain assessment, and euthanasia decision-making is the most impactful lever for hospital pen welfare improvement.
