Following scientific recognition of decapod sentience, welfare audit systems for farmed shrimp are beginning to emerge — a significant development for billions of animals.
Shrimp represent perhaps the largest welfare challenge in aquaculture by individual animal numbers. Despite this scale, welfare-specific auditing is in its infancy. The scientific recognition of decapod sentience has catalyzed development of the first shrimp-specific welfare assessment tools, focusing on density management, water quality thresholds that cause stress, and slaughter method evaluation. The Shrimp Welfare Project's work with producers in Southeast Asia demonstrates that on-farm welfare improvements are achievable within existing production systems. The critical next steps are: integration of welfare metrics into mainstream certification schemes (ASC, organic), adoption of electrical or carbon dioxide stunning before harvest, and density reduction standards grounded in shrimp behavioral research.
