Emerging technologies including precision livestock farming, AI-based welfare monitoring, and non-invasive biosensors are creating new capabilities for assessing and improving animal welfare at scale.
Animal welfare technology represents a transformative opportunity to scale welfare monitoring beyond what is achievable through human observation alone. The gap between welfare aspiration and practical monitoring capacity is the primary limit on welfare improvement at the scale of commercial animal production. Technologies that enable continuous, objective welfare assessment of millions of animals simultaneously could finally make welfare standards that currently exist only on paper into realities that are routinely verified. The most promising near-term welfare technology applications are those that detect the high-prevalence, high-severity welfare problems in current systems, particularly lameness in dairy cattle, respiratory disease in intensively housed pigs, and pre-slaughter stress in all major farmed species. Adoption requires both technological development and regulatory frameworks that create incentives for implementation.
