Power line electrocution causes immediate death or severe burn injuries that are acutely painful and often ultimately fatal. For white storks, which nest on utility poles in many parts of their European range, the proximity to power infrastructure creates recurring exposure to electrocution risk. The technology to prevent most electrocutions is straightforward — insulating conductors and installing appropriate nesting platforms eliminates most risk at affected poles. The challenge is the cost and scale of retrofitting existing infrastructure across large areas. Spain's successful program demonstrates that coordinated utility, government, and conservation organization cooperation can achieve substantial mortality reduction. Each modified pole represents a direct welfare improvement for individual birds.
