Wild fish welfare is difficult to assess directly at the individual level but can be inferred from population health indicators. Fish in degraded habitats — polluted waters, fragmented rivers, depleted prey bases — show welfare-compromising physiological stress responses. The welfare improvement case for habitat restoration is supported by evidence that fish in restored habitats show better condition, lower parasite loads, and reduced stress indicators. Individual welfare benefit from habitat restoration scales with the size of the restored population. Large-scale habitat restoration is therefore one of the highest-impact wild fish welfare interventions available.
