RAS technology represents both an opportunity and a challenge for farmed trout welfare. The ability to precisely control water quality parameters — oxygen, ammonia, carbon dioxide, temperature — means environmental welfare can be maintained at higher standards than in open pond or flow-through systems. However, the capital investment pressure to maximize stocking density in expensive RAS infrastructure often pushes density well above welfare-optimal levels. The welfare advantage of RAS is only realized when its control capabilities are used to benefit fish rather than to enable intensification beyond what open systems permit.
