CDS welfare management recognizes that environment can compensate for cognitive decline in meaningful ways. Dogs with CDS experience the canine equivalent of dementia — confusion, anxiety, and loss of previously learned behaviors. While pharmacological support with selegiline and melatonin helps some dogs, environmental modification is low-cost, low-risk, and immediately implementable. Reducing environmental complexity — fewer choices, consistent routines — paradoxically improves welfare for cognitively declining dogs who find novel situations distressing.
