Reptiles are among the most commonly kept exotic pets but have highly specific environmental needs that are difficult to meet in captivity, leading to widespread suffering.
Reptile suffering in the pet trade is largely invisible because these animals do not vocalize or show pain in ways humans readily recognize. Yet metabolic disease, parasite loads, dehydration, and thermal stress cause chronic suffering for millions of captive reptiles. Species-appropriate husbandry is complex and expensive.
