Cat obesity is a welfare emergency hiding in plain sight. Overweight cats experience chronic joint pain, reduced mobility, difficulty grooming, and impaired thermoregulation — all suffering that accumulates silently over years. The human tendency to equate food with love, combined with marketing of high-calorie palatable diets, drives the epidemic. Weight loss in cats must be gradual — rapid weight loss causes hepatic lipidosis, a life-threatening condition. Effective weight management requires accurate caloric counting, transition to wet or raw diets, environmental enrichment to increase activity, and regular body condition scoring by veterinary staff. Owner education at the time of neutering about adjusted caloric needs is a missed prevention opportunity.
