Welfare monitoring technology offers a potential step-change in our ability to detect and respond to animal welfare problems at scale. Human observation — even by highly skilled, attentive stockpeople — inevitably misses problems in large animal groups. Automated systems that monitor every individual continuously provide a complementary monitoring layer that detects early signs of lameness, disease, or behavioral change before they escalate to severe welfare events. The welfare case is particularly strong for early disease detection: illness detected and treated at the first behavioral sign causes far less suffering than illness identified only when clinical signs are obvious. Technology adoption requires investment in hardware and software plus stockperson training in interpreting outputs — technology that generates alerts without appropriate human response provides no welfare benefit.
