The okapi is a rare and evolutionarily unique forest ungulate whose captive management presents distinctive welfare challenges.
Okapi welfare in captivity requires careful attention to their solitary, shy temperament. Unlike many zoo species, forced proximity to conspecifics or excessive visitor exposure can trigger severe stress responses that compromise immune function. Enclosure design must prioritize visual barriers, retreat zones, and naturalistic vegetation. Dietary management should include substantial browse to support natural feeding behavior. Okapis have been successfully managed in a small number of accredited zoos that understand their specialized needs, and serve as important ambassadors for their endangered wild counterparts in Congo.
