Equine metabolic syndrome is a growing welfare challenge in domestic horses linked to modern management and dietary practices.
EMS-related laminitis causes intense, chronic pain that dramatically impairs quality of life. The welfare challenge is that prevention requires significant management restriction — limiting pasture access and caloric intake — which itself reduces behavioral opportunities for affected horses. Owners frequently struggle to maintain the dietary discipline required, particularly when horses are visually distressed by pasture restriction. Management support, including grazing muzzles, track systems, and dry lots, enables a middle path that limits sugar intake while maintaining some movement opportunity. Early diagnosis and strict management can prevent laminitis episodes that would otherwise cause severe suffering and potential euthanasia.
